Nanomedicine Lab (Sapienza)

Amphiphile-Based Nanomedicines: Principles, Rational Design, and Characterization

The practical sessions will open with an introductory overview of nanocarrier fundamentals and the relevant theoretical background. In the laboratory, students will observe a rational design approach, formulating, purifying, and characterizing several types of nanocarriers obtained through different preparation methods, all starting from the same surfactant. This will illustrate how a single set of starting materials can be strategically tailored to yield distinct nanostructures, depending on the intended therapeutic application.

IR & THz Lab (Sapienza)

Exploring quantum excitations with Fourier Transform infrared spectroscopy

Participants will learn the basics of this experimental technique, performing some measurements with our aid.

Try turning a semiconductor nanowire into a nanolaser !

By using optical nanospectroscopy, probe the optical resonances in a nanowire cavity, and play with different refractive indexes, cavity lengths and gain media to create your nanolaser.

Photonics Lab (Sapienza)

Coupling light-emitting 2D materials with on-chip photonic circuits

During this interactive laboratory demonstration, participants will explore how laser power, temperature, and excitation-spot position affect the intensity of the light emitted by a two-dimensional crystal and coupled into a lithographically defined photonic waveguide.

The true nature of light

In this workshop, we will discover whether light is just a wave or if a quantum theory is necessary to describe it. I will first give a theoretical introduction to the second-order autocorrelation function, how to measure it, and how it helps to distinguish different types of light. After this, we will visit a quantum optics lab where we will measure the second-order autocorrelation function in real-time using the light emission from a semiconductor quantum dot to prove that a wave-only description fails under certain circumstances, demonstrating that light is indeed quantized.
